Can students install their own apps?

Yes, students will be allowed to install their own apps as well. Students should be attentive to the number and size of the apps and files they choose to install on their iPad.

What kind of data storage and security will there be?

We view the iPad as a device important for learning, and our expectation will be that the iPad be primarily used for academic pursuits.  The iPad, like any digital device, has storage limitations. The iPad students will receive will have 32GB (gigabytes) of data storage. If a student were to install too many of his/her own apps, music, and media, there is a potential for them to run out of storage memory that may be needed for his/her school work or the installation of an app or eText required for class. In this case, the student will be required to delete the “non-classroom” related content to make room for the required content.

How can students purchase apps?
Students will need to to add an Apple ID with a password to their iPad. An Apple ID is an account with Apple Inc. that allows for the purchase of apps from Apple’s AppStore. In order to purchase apps with a cost associated with them (“paid apps”), Apple requires attachment of a credit card to the Apple ID. However, a charge for purchasing a “paid app” can only be applied to the credit card once the Apple ID password is entered for each app purchase in the AppStore. An Apple ID may be set up without a credit card attached but this will only allow for the purchase of apps with no cost associated with them (free apps). Families may decide to keep the password from students and enter it on an as needed basis. Please review our The Apple ID page within this website, and download the Apple ID Parent Guide for further details.

Is there a student use policy for the iPads?

All upper school students are required to follow the practices and requirements of the Upper School Student Technology Responsible Use Policy. Prior to receiving access to any of the Hackley networked services, all students new to the Upper School student were required to successfully complete and pass a quiz assessing their knowledge and understanding of the Student Technology Use Policy. A copy of this policy appears in the student handbook.
