Apple ID

In order to use an iPad, students will need an Apple ID.  All iPads must be activated with an Apple ID to function. An Apple ID is a password based personal account with Apple that “you can use for everything you do with Apple” including the App Store and iCloud services.

An Apple ID may be set up without a credit card attached but this will only allow for the purchase of apps with no cost associated with them (free apps). Families may decide to keep the password from students and enter it on an as needed basis. Please download and review the Apple ID Parent Guide for further details. Please also check the Apple ID FAQ pages for answers to questions that may not be addressed here.

What to Do Before Coming In To Pick Up Your iPad

A fully authorized Apple ID is the key to the best success for configuring your iPad for school use. The Apple ID you use to set up your iPad, must also be the same Apple ID you will use to purchase eTexts or apps. Before coming in to pick up your iPad, please be sure that your Apple ID is fully verified and authorized by following the steps detailed below. For a new Apple ID, begin with step 1. If you are going to use an existing Apple ID, either yours or your parent’s, please start at step 3.

  1. If this is a new Apple ID, set it up through Apple’s My Apple ID site
    • Be sure that the ID you use is a working email address.
    • A personal email address is preferred
    • We recommend that you do not use your Hackley email address as an Apple ID
  2. Following the setup of your new ID, you will receive an email from Apple asking you to confirm and verify. Please follow the instructions and do so.
  3. Using your Apple ID and password, please login to iTunes.
    • If you receive one or more error messages asking you to provide additional information, please do so.
    • Please answer and satisfy all messages and requests that arise from this login process. Please don’t ignore or skip any.
  4.  While logged into iTunes, go to the App Store and purchase a free app.
    • Any free app will due, e.g., Google Drive, Google Docs.
    • You will find Apple’s list of top free apps in the lower right area of the page.

You may also purchase Apps with an iTunes gift card, without linking the Apple ID to a credit card. This has been an easy way for me to allow my kids to purchase Apps for their devices (and using their own Apple ID) without worrying about a spree on my credit card.
