Will I be able to get help desk support if my iPad is not working?

The technology department will be available to support students with diagnosing potential causes, and addressing technical issues with the iOS or specific apps. In the event a hardware repair is needed, the technology department can provide guidance and assistance as to the process required to facilitate the repair. If preferred or more convenient, students and parents can also take advantage of their AppleCare+ coverage through their local Apple Store. Hackley School will provide a loaner iPad for the student to use during the time the student’s unit is out for repair or waiting to be replaced. This should be considered a short-term loan for a few days to a week.

What happens if an iPad is damaged as a result of an accident?

Students and families are responsible for the repair of all damages, whether they are a result of an accident, carelessness, or student negligence. Hackley School will provide a loaner iPad for the student to use during the time the student’s unit is out for repair or waiting to be replaced. This should be considered a short-term loan for a few days to a week.
If interested, families are invited to consider purchasing additional accidental damage insurance for the device. Please be aware that virtually no company will cover damages to an iPad caused through normal wear and tear, malicious intent, carelessness, or neglect. In this case, the parent will be responsible for the cost of repair.  Please see our Additional Insurance page for more detailed information.

What happens if my child’s iPad is lost or stolen?

If the iPad is lost or stolen, the student and family would be responsible for the cost of the replacement iPad. If loss or theft is a concern, families may consider purchasing additional insurance coverage for the iPad, or work with your personal homeowner/renter insurance provider to include the iPad as part of your coverage. This will help cover the cost of an unrecoverable iPad. Please see our Additional Insurance page for 3rd party providers and contact information. As part of our iPad deployment process, Hackley will require that students configure the “Find my iPad” feature when setting up the iPad. This will allow you to remotely erase the iPad and perhaps even locate it on a map. This feature should remain “On” at all times.

Will I lose my data if I need to have my iPad repaired or if my iPad operating system requires an upgrade?

Some repairs, updates, and upgrades may result in the loss of data from the iPad. All Hackley students are expected to maintain a backup of all of their data. This backup process should be automatic or regularly maintained.  It is recommended that students use any combination of cloud-based storage or productivity solutions that might work for them including iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, or another service of their choosing to store documents, projects, presentations, spreadsheets, etc. If the automatic backup process had been set correctly, the information from the lost iPad can be easily transferred to a loaner or a new iPad using Apple’s iCloud backup service.

Will students be accessing their textbooks on the iPads?

All textbook decisions are left to the individual academic departments and are made based on the quality of the publication, and whether it addresses the learning needs of our students. Through our annual textbook review process, and in our work with our textbook reseller, we also look at whether our preferred texts can be provided in a digital eText format. If a required text is available in a digital format, then it is recommended that students purchase the digital version for use on the iPad. More information about eTexts will become available during July/August.

Will students continue to need access to a laptop or desktop computer?

For students, only the iPad will be required in school. Our computer labs will remain open and operational. In the event a teacher feels that a laptop or desktop computer would better serve student learning needs for a particular classroom activity, then the class will be taken to one of our computer labs for that purpose.  A student can choose to carry a second device with them, however they will be expected to have their iPad with them during every class.

Will my child be allowed to use another tablet device other than the iPad?

No. After considerable research and discussion, our faculty has decided that the iPad is the device of choice for us. In order to most effectively involve students with digital learning activities, it is important that there be a standardization of devices. This standardization will allow faculty to best answer the more common tech questions one might hear in class, and also allow students to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of their classmates who are using the same device.

Can I print from my iPad?

It is highly recommended that students use our existing cloud based services, e.g., Google Drive to share work with teachers and fellow students. It is both efficient and environmentally friendly. In the event a printed copy of a paper or project is required by a teacher, students will be able to print to the printers currently available to them.

What training and/or support will I receive?

Hackley will host student orientation sessions in late-August. Our tech department is also a location where students can receive assistance.
