No hassle summer work

Hi everyone! Just checking in from the middle of our vacation. Before I left campus, I was asked by a few parents about what they could have their child do during the summer that would help keep their reading and writing skills sharp without making it too much of a chore. Many families automatically resort to the traditional tutor, which definitely works with very specific needs in developing literacy. However, for the bulk of children, they just need to be involved with text and held to some accountability to keep up their stamina and comprehension. I would strongly suggest having your  child join a book group/literacy circle that also requires them to do “something” with their reading (conversations, responses, art, video, music, etc). Children need to be reminded that books can take on a completely different level of entertainment as well as thoughtful engagement when they are asked to analyze and synthesize with it.  If you would like your child to join one of my online literature circles this summer, please follow this link to sign up. It’s open to anyone grades 2-5 that would like to take it,  not just Hackley students.  I hope to see you online soon!

Genius hour: Students, what would you like to learn today? – CNN.com

I remember first being introduced to this idea after watching a TED talk on how Google boosts productivity and out of the box thinking- there are several other companies that use this as well. I think it could have a tremendous value for students-

Appropriate Content for Gifted Readers | Duke TIP

Always an ongoing problem for the parents of  voracious and accelerated readers – CONTENT! Just because they “can” read it, doesn’t mean they should.

The snow has me thinking of summer!

It’s official- the summer programs have now been posted! https://www.hackleyschool.org/podium/default.aspx?t=170906

I am so looking forward to reprising my online literature circles this summer. I love that my students can literally be anywhere in the world and log in whenever they want- the flexibility is fantastic. There are three texts that we will be sharing:

This year the Hackley summer programs are vast and broad with their offerings…. makes me wish I  could take some of the classes! One of the best things about our summer programs are that they are open to everyone- not just Hackley students.

I hope you sign up for one (or more) books to read with me! Let me know if you have any questions!
