Does Life Exist on Other Planets?

By Marlowe H.

Mars is a red planet that is covered in dust. Is life possible on Mars? People have different opinions. Some people believe that might be life on Mars and other people do not agree. But what kind of life do they think exists? Maybe there could be aliens, green headed large Aliens. Is this even possible?

Nobody knows if life is possible on Mars.Scientists believe that a long time ago there was life on Mars. Scientists haven’t found any evidence but one day they might. Scientists have been searching for this answer using a rover. The rover is in fact on Mars this second. The rover can search  if life is on mars. The rover has a camera to see stuff on Mars like maybe rocks and to take videos of what is happening on Mars. It can also search to see if there was any evidence of water or life.Four out of six Hackley students think that life is possible on Mars.

Writing Tips

By Emily H.

Hey, have you ever felt scared or have anxiety when you’re thinking about the writing process or when writing a story? Well, I’m here to give you some tips to help relieve some stress and make you excited about writing! Here are my go to tips for writing a really powerful story!

#1: Before you start writing you need to think of a topic. Here’s a tip, you can think of a couple topics because it might be more stressful to think of only one topic.

#2: You need to set the characters and setting. Thinking about real people you know can help and relieve a lot of stress and get really dynamic characters .

#3: Think of the plot. Again, you can take from your own life’s experiences.I have found that some of the best stories are based on real life and real people.

#4: When drafting, you don’t want to spend a lot of time on capitalization or spelling. Instead, just focus on the story and add as many details as possible.

#5: When you revise and edit, you can scan with your fingers. Scanning for mistakes can help a lot, and reading it out loud to other people or yourself helps.

#6:  When you publish, make sure to be confident when presenting and sharing with friends or family.

I really hope that these tips and steps helped you relieve some stress you may have when writing. Thanks for reading my paragraph about writing.

Reflection on our Lower School Experience

This is Sophie and Henry, reporting upon our favorite things in the Lower School. We have been a part of the Hackley community for many years. Since we started in Kindergarten, we’ve stayed here until fourth grade. Now, our Lower School experience is coming to an end. This will, sadly, be our last journalism article in the Lower School. So now we’re reflecting on our favorite things about each grade in the Lower school.

My (Henry’s) favorite thing about Kindergarten was how bright my classroom was and how, even though we had different things we liked, we all hung out together. Sophie, who is working on this with me, said she “loved the sense of a whole community, opposed to the complex social life of fourth grade circles. Nobody was “popular”. There was no division between boys, girls, and people who focused on school”. Another thing that both of us liked was the Kindergarten Post Office. We loved all the stages and the feeling of exhilaration when you read your letters, and also the feeling of responsibility, and not the bad kind! Shoutout to Ms. Stapelton, Ms. Function, Ms. Donlevy, and Ms. Farley, for guiding us through our first year and helping make us the people we are today.

Thank you to the first grade teachers for making this a memorable year. You made this last pre-COVID year worth every minute. In first grade, my (Henry’s) favorite thing was the Flat Stanley project because I loved learning about what my Flat Stanley did, and what other peoples’ Flat Stanley did. I also liked doing the musical and learning the songs. I liked the feeling of success when we finished the play. I love ‘Fifty Nifty’ to this day. I (Sophie) loved the Flat Stanley mailing project. I was so excited to receive my Flat Stanley back, with the letters and pictures of what he’s been doing!

In second grade, I (Sophie) really enjoyed writing our fairy tales/fables. Even though they were only a couple of pages long, typing them took hours, even with teachers’ help! I (Henry) also enjoyed writing stories like my fairy tale and fable. Also, we liked brainstorming. Even when we had writer’s block, we still got through it and we had a good story. They were some of the first writing projects that we did. It gave us huge self confidence for our writing skills. We would also like to give a big thanks to second grade teachers for helping us through tech glitches, being resourceful, and making zoom as fun as it can be. When there was so much darkness in the world, our teachers were a beacon of light.

When you enter third grade you get a mental growth spurt. The third grade teachers were perfect for us as we grew up. 2020-2021 was a weird, turbulent time. We were always on the edge because we knew we were always on the brink of going back to Zoom school. The teachers knew that and supported us. For example, our teacher took back her magnifier every day, just in case. Ms. Kanter would host a Friday snack costume party when we were on Zoom during spirit week.  I (Henry) loved our poetry unit and all writing in general. My teacher helped nurture my writing skills. I (Sophie) also loved the poetry unit, and I also loved writing Polar Opposites with my reading group. Ms. Kanter made it so fun!

4th grade: CRAZY. We were expected to lead now that we were in fourth grade, with no preparation or anything. Everyone looked up to us, and we were still only third graders in disguise. Mask regulations kept changing, and we still lived in fear of going home, and going remote. The teachers are perfect for this. They are preparing us for our life in middle school, while showing us how to be leaders. Though we still have 2 ½ weeks left of school, my (Henry) favorite thing about fourth grade is writing my Historical Fiction. I also liked my Black History Month Biography. I (Sophie) like my Historical Fiction Picture Book, as well as my biography on Stephen Hawking. We would also like to thank all the specials teachers for all you do to make our time out of our homeroom classroom awesome. Thank you teachers. Thank you for preparing us perfectly for Middle School. Thank you.

Hackley’s Arts: Music

 Culture.

You’ve probably heard of it. It’s that thing that your parents use to drag you to a museum, or a concert, or to force you to read a boring book. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Culture is about the arts, but the arts do not have to be boring. Classical music does include jazz, art is not all boring portraits and religious painting, and old writing is not always tales of boring, dry, old fashioned people.

The arts are the essence of culture. This article highlights one of arts around Hackley. Music around Hackley is featured here.

Tone chimes:

Music from 3rd  grade

Music from 4th grade

What Is Creativity?🤔

Cecelia F.

You probably think you know the exact definition of creativity, but do you really?!? According to Britannica, creativity is defined as “the ability to make new things or think of new ideas.” (P.S. it’s a noun). Okay, so maybe that was what you thought, but still, I think I can teach you a bit more about it! Creativity can be seen in thousands of ways, including: fashion, interior design, makeup, art, origami, food, gymnastics, writing, etc. The reason I wrote this was because I want people to know what THEY want and follow THEIR heart. I know that sounds like a Disney movie but I swear it’s not. There are many ways that creativity is shown at Hackley, because we are such a creative school! For example, Did you know that the 3E-P class is going to have an Art gallery, on April 22nd? Also, in HEAL and Service Learning we are being very creative by thinking of multiple different ideas to save our burning planet.  Peace Out! ✌️ (P.S. this paragraph was done by a creative person, ME!!!)
