Design Thinking, Deconstructed | MindShift | KQED News

At the Nueva School in Hillsborough, Calif., design thinking is built into students’ and teachers’ everyday lives. The process, which is an approach to learning that includes considering real-world problems, research, analysis, building by hand, and lots of experimentation, is documented and shared among staff.

Alliance for Digital Fabrication Education

Adfab:ED helps young people through education programs using interest-directed problem solving with digital fabrication technology.

The Alliance for Digital Fabrication Education is an 501c3 organization whose mission is to create equal access to meaningful learning opportunities for under-served youth and promote development of critical thinking and design entrepreneurship with the use of digital fabrication tools.

We promote the curriculum of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math though direct problem solving with advanced tools and equipment. We believe in the enhancement of our technological progress and economic prosperity through early exposure to digital fabrication technology, and see a future world being balanced by the democratization of digital manufacturing innovations.

Our focus;

  • Project-based and student-centered learning
  • Exposure to mentors and industry professionals
  • Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing track programs
  • Promoting entrepreneurship and citizenship
  • Developing communities of innovation

PiBakery – The blocks based, easy to use setup tool for Raspberry Pi

Easily Customise RaspbianThe key feature of PiBakery is the ability to create a customised version of Raspbian that you write directly to your Raspberry Pi. This works by creating a set of scripts that run when the Raspberry Pi has been powered on, meaning that your Pi can automatically perform setup tasks, and you don’t need to configure anything. The scripts are created using a block based interface that is very similar to Scratch. If you’ve used Scratch before, you already know how to use PiBakery. Simply drag and drop the different tasks that you want your Raspberry Pi to perform, and they’ll be turned into scripts and written to your SD card. As soon as the Pi boots up, the scripts will be run.For more information on creating customised SD cards with PiBakery, please see the Creating an SD Card Guide.

MATRIX

We built MATRIX Creator to teach novice developers about hardware, while providing experts with an extremely useful piece of hardware to add to their tool kit. We want to shape the growth of our existing and future builders, developers, makers, and engineers and reduce friction for hardware creation.

STEMcentric

STEMcentric is a resource for those involved with STEM education, either as a student or instructor.  It is the home for the LEGO Robotics tutorials for the Mindstorms EV3, NXT and even the RCX.  Here you’ll also find a vast array of STEM-related resources, many inherited from the now departed Oregon Pre-engineering and Applied Sciences (OPAS) effort led by Jo Oshiro. STEMcentric is lovingly maintained by FRC Team 1540, the Flaming Chickens.

Design Make Teach

Design Make Teach is a blog about MAKING in the classroom. MAKING is a process that engages students in thinking, making and sharing. My name is Josh Ajima. I am a teacher. I believe that I can MAKE a difference. In 2012, I helped plan a TEDx event. My TEDx wish was for a 3D printer for my school. When that wish didn’t magically come true, I decided to MAKE it happen and bought a 3D printer out of personal funds. I now DESIGN, MAKE and SHARE lessons on MAKING in the classroom.
