Definitions
- 1st generation: “The first generation refers to those who are foreign born” (US Census Bureau). However, some view the first generation as the children of foreign born persons.
- 2nd generation: “The second generation refers to those with at least one foreign-born parent” (US Census Bureau). Some people also refer to the second generation as the grandchildren of immigrants.
- 1.5-generation: Often used to refer to persons who are foreign born, but move to the US at a young age.
- Immigrants: “…foreign-born persons who obtain legal permanent residence in the United States.” (US Census Bureau)
- Foreign born: “Foreign born refers to people who are not U.S. citizens at birth.” (US Census Bureau)
- Living: “noun: the condition of being alive”; “noun: conduct or manner of life.” (Merriam Webster).
- Between: “preposition: in the time, space, or interval that separates”; “preposition: serving to connect or unite in a relationship (such as difference, likeness, or proportion)” (Merriam Webster).
- Hyphen: “a punctuation mark – used especially to divide or to compound words, word elements, or numbers” (Merriam Webster).
- Anthology: “a collection of selected literary pieces or passages or works of art or music” (Merriam Webster).
