Great Tits May Be Evolving Bigger Beaks. Here’s Why

An evolutionary biologist named Lewis Spurgin at a university in the UK , along with some other scientists, have been studying birds called great tits. These birds may be evolving bigger beaks because they have been eating from bird feeders. They looked at the DNA of two different groups of great tits, yellow-and-black songbirds. One group was in the UK and the other one was in the Netherlands. There were differences in the genes responsible for the beak length. The group in the UK had longer beaks than the ones in the Netherlands. They think this may be because there are more bird feeders in the UK. They are still not sure as there might be other things affecting the beak length.

I chose this article because I really like birds and they are fun to observe. It is important to science because of evolution. This article is important to to the world because everything evolves over a long period of time. We have not learned this in class, although it is very interesting to learn about this in science.
